Museum Victoria visits EGAG Thursday 26 August 2010
The Art of Scientific Observation
To celebrate the International Year of Biodiversity and Science Week 2010, Museum Victoria is visiting the East Gippsland Art Gallery, Bairnsdale, for one day of performance, art activities and local environmental awareness.
This day of free activities consists of two parts:
- EXPLORE THE PAST–DISCOVER THE FUTURE
PERFORMANCE 11.30am & 1:30pm
Come on a journey of scientific discovery and observation with the character Wilhelm Blandowski–Museum Victoria’s first Director. His expeditions throughout Victoria in the 1850's formed the basis of the museum’s natural science collections. The performance highlights the important role of illustration in historical and contemporary scientific research, collecting, documenting and environmental conservation. - SCIENCE BY OBSERVATION
ACTIVITIES 11:00am–3:00pm.
Drop in anytime between 11 and 3 and participate in a variety of hands-on art and drawing activities. Learn more about the drawing techniques used by scientists and scientific illustrators. Explore the link between local environmental biodiversity through art and scientific observation. The workshop provides a unique opportunity to investigate museum specimens first-hand.
Contact EGAG to register your interest.

Get Into Art – Art & Craft Expo
Saturday 24 October 2009
Each year the members of the Public Galleries Association of Victoria open their galleries for a day of special activities.
This year EGAG invited community groups to be represented by 1 or 2 members to talk to visitors to the Gallery about their group’s activities.
The Arts and Crafts Expo was well attended with more than 85 visitors over the day and only a short lull over lunchtime which at least gave everyone time to snatch something to eat.
- 11 groups participated including:
- Bairnsdale & District Arts Society
- EG Ceramic Group
- EG Photographic Society
- EG Writers
- Fabulous Felt
- Friends EG Art Gallery
- Fusion Fibre Network

Scarecrow Trail
Scarecrows in a wide variety of shapes and sizes are appearing all over East Gippsland as the East Gippsland Art Gallery’s "Scarecrow Trail" takes shape.
Service clubs, schools, kindergartens, community groups and individuals from Gabo Island to Tubbut, from Lindenow to Swifts Creek, Paynesville, Nowa Nowa and Metung and all places in between have added their scarecrows to the Trail.
"We have had such a great response to the Scarecrow Trail," said gallery director, Eileen Thurgood. "It’s been a huge task getting around to the various locations to photograph them but it will make a fantastic catalogue which will then become the Trail Guide".
The Scarecrow Trail Guide, listing all the scarecrows, will be available after Easter at the East Gippsland Art Gallery, 2 Nicholson Street, Bairnsdale during gallery hours for $2 per copy.
Scarecrows are in place from 31 March and remain up until 31 May as the Trail is part of the East Gippsland On Show festivities.
You can see scarecrows in:
| Bairnsdale | on the Bairnsdale/Dargo Road | Noorinbee |
| Lindenow | Wy Yung | Lucknow |
| Paynesville | Nungurner | Metung |
| Bruthen | Ensay | Swifts Creek & along the Cassilis Road |
| Lakes Entrance | Nowa Nowa | Buchan |
