Seen in the Light – Light in a Box

This amazing exhibition of 29 black boxes is EGAG’s current touring exhibition.

Black boxes would appear to have no relevance to ‘light’ or looking at art and the perplexity of being confronted with identical boxes soon turns to delight as visitors peer through the eye piece while pushing the button to illuminate the interior.

Seen in the Light was EGAG’s contribution to the Creative Gippsland month of May celebrations.  The project involved 2 parts; Light Graffiti – an exhibition that invited secondary school students to ‘draw with light’ and Light in a Box – artworks by local artists.

Light in a Box invited 29 artists to create a piece in a 20x20x25cm box – the work only visible when viewed through a security lens and illuminated by a small light activated by the viewer.  The confines of the box and the distortion of the lens really tested the patience and ingenuity of the artists.

But the result is a fascinating collection of miniature installations.  These wonderful, intimate little spaces each contain a unique creation; no two boxes are the same.

Light in a Box opened its tour at Orbost Exhibition Centre in September 2011.  The exhibition comes with its own special display stands, catalogue and didactic panels.  The stands were designed to accommodate the boxes at a convenient viewing height and were purchased by Friends of EGAG especially for the tour.

Artists participating in Light in a Box include:

Michelle-Deb Armstrong, Ellen Burton, John Butler, Philip Cappadona, Di Deppeler, Don Dickie, Marcus Foley, Rhonda Gray, Kellie Hancock, Jeni Irwin, Josephine Jakobi, Daniel Jenkins, Ian Keegan, Jan Learmonth, Robert Logie, Annie Marshall, John McKenzie, Joyce Nowrungsah, Jason Parmington, Vanessa Power, Anna Roberts, Kate Shone, Wilma Ross, Dore Stockhausen, Mary Sullivan, Eileen Thurgood, Bev Wilkin, Jerry Williams and Gary Yelen.
