ARTISTS IN ISOLATION | 2020
Rhonda Gray
Bairnsdale, East Gippsland, May 2020
My focus changes regularly, driven by current events, my students, newly acquired knowledge, emotions and discoveries.
I paint mainly in oils, in a fairly traditional method, however this changes as I set myself challenges or goals, or I experiment with different forms of paint application.
My painting style is anywhere from representation abstract through to super realism. I paint mainly on a square format, (there’s just something about this shape that attracts me) - unless it’s a traditional portrait. I love to paint big if allowed, using a limited palette.
My most recent work reflects the effects of the recent fires with a focus on devastated habitat and how humans have had to step in to lend a helping hand. My painting entitled ‘Sustenance’ is one example of this.

I reside in Bairnsdale and have been a professional artist for the last 6 years. My workspace is filled with light, has a lovely garden view and a couple of cats. I had been teaching art for over 30 years before opening my studio in Bairnsdale weekly for classes in 2013. I teach art classes locally, interstate and internationally. I have been the recipient of many metropolitan, regional and local awards and have appeared on the National television series “Colour in your life”, a series of documentaries about living artists.
